Does Buteyko work?

Buteyko is an accepted mainstream treatment for asthma in Russia.

The method was introduced in Australia in 1990 and in New Zealand in 1994. Results from a Brisbane trial indicated asthmatics using the Buteyko Method reduced use of beta-agonists (relievers) by 96% and steroids by 49%.

The first North American study was conducted at Foothills Hospital in Calgary, Alberta, Canada in 2004. Proceedings of the American Thoracic Society, 2006;3:A530 show that results after applying the Buteyko techniques for 6 months include:

Asthma control improved from 41% to 75%

Preventer usage - median reduction 39%

Preventer usage - elimination of 21%
